How to Drive Safely Along Interstate Highways

Stretching 41,000 miles, the Interstate Highway System has always been the epicentre of vehicle collisions. With vehicles flying at top speeds, accidents are very much common.

Regardless of the type of vehicle you’re handling, it’s always important to keep yourself safe as you drive along interstate highways. Let’s take a look at a few important tips for safer driving.

    1. Brush up on basic defensive driving

No matter how skilled a driver you are, you still need to use basic defensive driving techniques such as keeping a safe distance from vehicles ahead of you. Also, make sure to stay in the right lane and pass on the left. This is basic etiquette that will make it easier for other drivers to switch lanes if they have to.

    2. Maintain the right speed

Speeding has been the main cause for fatal car crashes, so it’s important to observe the speed limit of the state you are passing through. The highway isn’t the right place to drive beyond 80mph, especially in Texas. So, if you wouldn’t want to be pursued by state troopers, or worse, figure in a highway accident, stick to the number on the sign.

    3. Don’t drive distracted

This is obviously one of the most important basics taught at driving school. Sadly, not many drivers observe this simple rule. You might want to send a DM or talk to someone over the phone, but this could cause you to perceive what’s ahead. If you need to do something with your phone, don’t risk it. It’s always best to pull over at a safe spot.

    4. Know who to call

No matter how safe a driver you are, you are not spared from accidents, especially from drunk drivers and other types of negligent motorists. When you are involved in an accident, you should be able to call the nearest emergency services. Once the authorities arrive, you may need to call your auto insurance provider. You may also need to work closely with an attorney if the accident led to a serious injury, especially if it involves a commercial truck. In this case, you may need to contact a lawyer specializing in trucking accidents and learn more about what should be your next move.

    5. Keep your vehicle in good condition

If you are going to drive long distances, it’s important to have your car serviced prior to the scheduled journey. Have a professional mechanic conduct a maintenance check to see if your car is still roadworthy. This should help you identify certain issues you will need to resolve immediately. A cracked windshield, for instance, should be patched up or replaced as the damage could worsen when the car reaches high speeds. Also, it’s important to have your batteries charged and fluids checked. You may have to change the oil as well. Lastly, make sure that the brakes and headlights are working. Once you have the all-clear, you can now drive your vehicle along the interstate.

Stay safe while you’re driving at break-neck speeds! Keep these tips in mind so you and your passengers can steer clear of any danger.
