Ferrari 488 GTB is the New King

If you are still looking for the holy grail of the best car in 2016, then I have all the right answers for you here. The Ferrari 488 GTB is the best car of 2016 by some way. Talking about the name of the car, GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinette, while the 488 indicates the engine’s unitary displacement. With its extreme performance capabilities, the ride has thrown the gauntlet for all the automotive leopards to try chasing it down.

If you happen to be a performance oriented motorist, who wants his ride to pack a true power punch, then the Ferrari 488 GTB is the car specifically designed for your needs and personality. It personifies a highly competitive individual who settles for nothing but the very best. Although power and performance remain the primary focus, driving comfort and sporty styling are of the highest standards as well.

The sporty looking ride is powered by a twin turbocharged 3.9 liter V8 engine. The engine yields an unprecedented power of 661 horses giving us a power boost of 18.5 percent over the Ferrari 458 that has given way to the new Ferrari 488 GTB. This peak power can be enjoyed from 6000 to 8000 RPM. If these power numbers still don’t satiate you, you should try the tuned version pumping out 84 hp more. With the mouth watering torque of 561 pound feet at 3000 RPM assisted by a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the ride can attain a top speed of 205 mph.

Ferrari seems to be still unfazed by the excessive use of carbon fiber among some of its competitors, as the car maker is persistent with its use of aluminum monocoque for the construction of Ferrari 488 GTB. Multiple alloys of aluminum in varying thicknesses have been employed for the ride giving it a weight compatibility with other rival brands. The 458 is10 kg heavier and the McLaren 650S is only 40 kilos lighter. The ride generates an astonishing down force of 325 kg, which is 50 percent more than that of 458 Italia through double-level front splitter, blown rear spoiler, new under tray and enlarged active rear diffuser. The ride has recorded a testing lap time of 1 minute 23 seconds at the Ferrari’s Fiorano handling track leading the replaced 458 Italia by 2 seconds.

Performance is the standout feature of the 488 GTB. The sheer power of the engine is only a part of the entire high performance package offered by the coupe, and that too in a style worthy of royalty. The Ferrari 488 GTB boasts the best gasoline engine in the business today. The manner in which the beast ramps towards the top speed with almost nonexistent lag is the real hallmark of this 2016 best car. It rockets from 0 to 60 mph in flat 3.0 seconds and can reach 100 mph in less than 6 seconds. It takes 13.3 seconds to reach 150 mph from static position. In addition to the hyper performance statistics, you can also achieve a fuel efficiency of 20 mpg if you handle the car with care.
A price increment can always be expected for a new Ferrari model. The Ferrari 488 GTB costs about $298,000 as compared to $274,000 of the 458 Italia. The price is near to that of the Lamborghini Huracán, but is less than the McLaren 650S.

It is very difficult to highlight one specific performance feature of the Ferrari 488 GTB in particular. The whole performance package is mind blowing and that includes turbocharged engine, chassis, very small lag and significantly lower drag force. These factors integrate to give us the best super car of 2016. We can only console with the likes of McLaren 650S, Honda NSX, Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2 and Noble M600, as they competed hard but to no avail.

    • The Audi RS3 is one of two ultimate ‘mega hatches’, and probably the best of the breed. Its astonishing pace and theatrical engine combine with huge grip and more of a driver focus than previous generations. It’s also a brilliant daily.

Are you parting with R1.3m (or more) for one? Let us know in the comments below.

    • The BMW i4 M50 is quite possibly the best EV we have had the pleasure of testing.

It's superbly comfortable but at the simple touch of a button, it switches from tourer to tornado and you find yourself instantly doing speeds you should not be doing.

While not all EVs will have the same refinement or scintillating performance, this was both relaxing and thrilling to drive.

The Gran Coupé is a handsome car with a sense of sleek length and disguises its hatchback as a booted saloon rear end and that M Portimao Blue metallic paint certainly garnered a lot of positive attention.

Compared with the BMW iX it’s less of a show-stopper, but comes with a much more attractive price tag – and while the i4 is still quite the financial investment (R1,6m) we feel it gives you excellent value in return.

Yes, we did have a few charging issues (Eskom) and if you don't have a Wallbox charger at home filling up with petrol is MUCH easier. However, that being said if you’re looking for an outstanding driving experience both on the twisties and on the highway, this is definitely worth considering if you have decided to make the jump to the electric car.

It actually makes the F12tdf look quite tame in comparison. Which would you rather have?

Priced around R14m depending on spec.

    • Our time has come to an end with the most potent version of Mzansi’s favourite bakkie, the new Toyota Hilux GR-Sport.

The 2.8-litre turbo diesel powerplant has been tweaked to push out 165kW and 550 Nm thanks to an updated ECU which also responsible for the much needed revised mapping of the six-speed auto.

The sporty Hilux gets new monotube shocks as well as stiffer coil springs which make the bakkie a lot more settled at higher speed and provide great feedback on some of the twisty bits. If you don’t have a full load at the back however, you might find it a tad too stiff and rather twitchy for day to day driving.

Inside you get a load of sporty touches including “carbon fibre” trim pieces but the highlight has to be the race inspired front seats complete with Alcantara inserts and some GR badging on the headrests.

For the Hilux customers, this is a welcome addition to the range as the exterior and interior aesthetics align very neatly with the GR brand.

Yours from R891,400. Are you picking this or the Legend RS?
