With access to a plethora of travel options including speedy train lines and discounted flights, travelling has never been easier. But if you prefer to start your adventure the moment you leave the house, the good old-fashioned road trip is the one for you!

Known as one of the most exciting and unforgettable means to explore the world, the road trip is a must for anyone who wants to get up close and personal with incredible sights on ground level. Make sure your car is fit for purpose and for the road, failure to do so could turn your dream trip into a nightmare if the worst was to happen. Get expert help at Kwik Fit.

So, where could your European road trip take you and what car type is best suited?

Journey through the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, Austria

If Austria is your destination of choice then the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is a trail not to be missed. The high alpine mountain pass winds through the iconic Austrian Alps, weaving through Austria’s most impressive national park along the way.

Reaching more than 2,500m altitudes, this 48 km stretch of land isn’t one for the faint-hearted but provides some of the world’s must-see views.

To tackle this route, you should travel in a small, light car that will provide speed and power as you travel up the steep mountain inclines.

    Travel to Trollstigen, Norway

With a steep 10-degree incline and 11 hair-raising hairpin bends the Trollstigen, is one of Europe’s most winding roads. The one-lane road route has been carved from the lofty mountains and supported by stone walls so beware of tumbling routes and treacherous terrain.

A smaller car with four-wheel drive systems is an advisable vehicle for great grip around the winding roads.

    Rally round Route One, Iceland

A great road trip for keen motorists and travel tourists alike, Iceland’s spectacular Route One road trip is always high up on any bucket list. From geysers erupting boiling water meters in the air, volcanoes and lava fields, to the stunning blue lagoon, no European road trip would be complete without witnessing the striking sights Iceland has to offer.

A good quality four-wheel-drive is advisable for this journey, a car that can take on all the elements.
