It’s not uncommon for drivers to try and look for ways to get lower car insurance rates. No one wants to pay more than they have to, especially for the same coverage. One thing that not a lot of people know is that factors about the car you drive play a role in what you pay.

Everyone knows that if you drive an expensive sports car you’ll pay more, but there are also other factors involved.

    Ask Your Provider
If the type of car you drive is not a huge concern, then you may want to ask your insurance provider which makes and models pay the lowest rates. There is always a list of the best cars to buy to get the lowest car insurance quotes, and if you get a car from that list you’ll have a head start when it comes to paying less for your insurance.

Basically, the list usually includes cars that have a higher safety rating and lower theft potential. If it gets in fewer serious accidents and doesn’t get stolen the claim possibility is going to be less.

    Security Features
Adding extra security features to a car is another way to decrease those car insurance quotes. Car alarms, steering wheel locks and immobilizers are three examples. The benefits of added security features to your insurance provider are fairly obvious. The potential for theft is one of the factors that affect your rate, so if you have the option to get a car that has added security features, take advantage of the opportunity.

    Safety Features
Added features that will increase the vehicle’s safety are also something that results in lower car insurance quotes. Things like anti-lock brakes or winter tires will usually result in lower rates because you’ll be less likely to get into an accident. Find out what kind of safety features will help keep your rates low and then try to have them be part of your next vehicle.

    Watch the Modifications
Aside from security and safety features, making modifications to a vehicle has the potential to raise your rates. There are no hard and fast rules as to which kinds of modifications will raise the rates and which ones won’t, so if you’re concerned it’s a good idea to ask. Any modifications designed to increase the car’s  performance will probably increase your rates, too.
