Can’t Afford A Super Car? Supercharge Your Own!

While it would be nice to buy the car of your dreams, the reality is that most people will never get the opportunity. However, instead of moping around and getting upset, why not make the most of your current car? All vehicles, regardless of age or value, can enjoy improved performance, if you are prepared to get your hands a little dirty. In today’s guide, we’re going to take a look at some of the easiest ways to get your car working better, faster, and more powerful. Let’s get started.

    Learn the basics

You don’t have to be a mechanical genius to start working on a car. But you do need to make yourself aware of some of the basics. The good news is it has never been easier to start learning about how cars work. Start with your owner’s manual, and read it back to front. It will give you everything you need to know about the basic maintenance that will keep your car running in great shape for longer. Next, take a look around the web and consume any information you can find. Everything from car modding forums to an automotive parts and accessories review will help. Once you have done this, you can start planning your new, improved, supercharged car.

    Switch your airbox and filter

One of the cheapest mods to start with is the simple task of upgrading your airbox and filter. These essential parts help your engine cool down by supplying it with cold air. The colder the air, and the more there is, the better your engine will work. It means more fuel efficiency and a higher rate of horsepower. An airbox and a long-life filter are dead cheap, and it is the perfect starting point for supercharging your old vehicle.

    Get a new exhaust

The standard exhaust on your car will deal with waste gasses just fine. But is ‘just fine’ enough for you? The truth is by upgrading your exhaust system you can expect significant performance improvements. A better exhaust lightens the pressure in the back of your car, which, in turn, lowers the temperature of your engine. Better exhausts mean a cooler engine, and a cooler engine gives you more horsepower and fuel efficiency. Just be aware if you go for a loud, rasping exhaust upgrade, you will attract the attention of many people, including police officers!

    Reprogram your ECU

Your engine control unit – or ECU – keeps everything going in your car, from your ignition timing to your airflow. The manufacturers of our vehicle program your ECU before selling it to you and set specific levels for everything. However, the ECU can be overwritten. You can change settings wherever you like, and do things like reducing your fuel consumption. However, you should bear in mind that ECUs can be sensitive. Even the smallest change in the wrong areas can lead to impacting your car’s performance. Either hand over the ECU to a professional tuning shop or wait until you have the experience to tackle it yourself.

    • We waited a fair bit for the Tiguan R to arrive but that means it has been given enough thought and executed with the sort of German precision that makes us happy to have waited.

As fast SUVs go it’s a cracker, and with a price tag starting from R1,014,900 it is actually decent value in the segment.

It’s fun, aggressive when you want it to be and remarkably civilised when you don’t. Cars like this rarely make sense, but the Tiguan R is one case where that argument starts to change one's mind.

We cannot wait to drive the matching Golf next week!

    • If you’re expecting a faster, angrier and more focused version of the original 86, you’re going to be happy with this car.

Toyota finally gave the 86 more power. It’s not take-your-breath-away power, but again, it’s not made to win drag races. If you want more power, get a Supra.

Sure it is a bit more pricey this time around but it is a no-regrets kind of car that you will enjoy just as much today as 10 years from now.

Long live the manual transmission, especially when it’s packaged within something as fun as the Toyota GR86.
