Have you ever heard the unpleasant clicking sound of your engine, when you are unable to start it? Then, you might want to consider having a jumpstart to ignite the engine.

There are numerous brands available on the market, and each one of them shares almost the same characteristics. Generally speaking, a jump box is a sealed battery, connected to jumper cables, which requires no maintenance.

It is sealed inside a plastic package, which makes it unlikely to spill if something happens. Every jump box offers a different amperage and reserve capacity. Some of them can start a few cars with a single charge, while others might not turn even a golf cart on.

When you buy the package, it must contain the battery, jumper cables, inverters, radios, air compressors, 12-volt accessory receptacles and emergency lights

    Using it safely

You must be aware whether your vehicle has any special procedures that you must follow when charging it. Apart from that, the process is pretty straightforward with all jump starters. Simply connect the positive jump box cable with the positive battery connection and then connect the negative one to a battery terminal or ground on the engine.

There’s one significant drawback with the jump boxes. They usually come with short a cable, which means that you must situate it somewhere close to the engine’s compartment.

However, you must be extremely careful as it is hazardous. This means that you must not use it near a radiator fan or any of the pulleys.

Other purposes of the jump box

Apart from jumpstarting, there are various other ways of using a jump box. The built-in 12-volt accessory socket can charge almost any device including your laptop, cell phone, tablet, etc. Moreover, they are perfect for long trips and camping as they allow you to charge other electronics as well.

In fact, the jump boxes have an air compressor, which means that you can fill up your car tires and all inflatable items. Remember that you should use them carefully because even though the battery is sealed, it can still leak.

Making a jump box of your own

So, after we learned that a jump box is basically a sealed acid battery, we are now aware that creating one for ourselves is an easy task. However, creating one of your own can cost you more than buying one.

To make your own, you will need a sealed battery with high cranking and cold cranking amperage. Do not forget to buy a battery box, or else you might experience a leakage due to overcharging or age. The last thing you will need are the jumper cables, which you can attach if you’d like.

However, you must determine whether the efforts spent on creating a DIY jump box are worth it. After all, building it yourself can cost much more than buying one. Moreover, going the DIY way is dangerous as a single mistake can cause a huge problem.
