Whether you are driving your own vehicle or whether it belongs to your employer, being fuel efficient is a great habit to practice. Fleet managers and owners are concerned with saving fuel as part of fleet management. They even go ahead to include software that can monitor the behavior of drivers while on the road. Great software like the AVL system can make sure that drivers are not taking other routes than the designated ones. Reputable fleet management companies train their staff in the following methods as good habits for saving fuel.

    Combining Trips

Whether it is a fleet vehicle or a personal car, errands must be well planned. Where possible, trips can be combined to save on fuel. If the company deals with the delivery of products, the products that are going to the same areas can be loaded on one truck and delivered systemically starting with those that are nearest. According to a reputable fleet management official, good planning can save many gallons of fuel each day for companies.

Frequent and Proper Maintenance of Vehicles

Changing the oil, checking the tire pressure, changing worn spare parts and all other services on the vehicle should not be skipped. A vehicle with faulty parts like worn out spark plugs will use more fuel. When the vehicle is struggling to function properly, the cost is paid in increased fuel usage. Opt for a GPS asset tracking and fleet management device that features customizable maintenance reminders to address vehicle wear and tear before it impacts your business. Fleet companies keep strict and accurate log books of the dates the vehicles must undergo servicing. Vehicles should be repaired using a professional mechanic as soon as they break down.

    Avoid Too Much Idling

While it may not be possible to move faster in a traffic jam, drivers can emulate the habit of being on the move at all times. Avoid leaving the vehicle on in the parking lot even if you are just using the washroom and coming back. You never know how long you will wait to use the washroom. Some drivers switch on the ignition many minutes before the journey starts; a few minutes is just enough to warm the engine.

    Offload Unnecessary Cargo

When the vehicle is carrying a heavy load, it burns more fuel. Sometimes, the trunk may be filled with cargo that you do not need. Instead, place the unneeded cargo in your garage store or the company’s store. Do not go around with unnecessary items while delivering for two to three days to come. Old car batteries and unnecessary tools should not be stored in your car since they can add unnecessary weight.

    Conservative Driving

Most professional drivers already know what conservative driving means. However, it is unfortunate that some drivers still do not understand their vehicles better. Higher RPMs can lead to higher fuel consumption. Therefore, avoid quickly accelerating when possible. Again, abrupt braking and starts are some of the habits that drain your fuel tank unnecessarily. It is good to be gentle with the vehicle not only to save fuel but also to give your vehicle a long life.

With the above options, you can rest assured that you will enjoy the best fuel efficiency that your vehicle can attain.
