While having kids is an adventure I think everyone should experience, it will change the way you shop for cars forever! When you’re young, the only thing that matters is your tastes and preferences. This is when you can look at convertibles, pickups, and anything your heart desires. When you’ve got a family to think about, there are a number of limitations to consider. Although buying a family car isn’t exactly fun, you can still take steps to make sure you get the best deal possible. Here are some of the most valuable tips for buying a family car.

Hopefully, life hasn’t hit you so hard that you need a people carrier straight away. If this is the case, then your options are probably a saloon and a hatchback. You might be naturally inclined towards a saloon, thinking that it will be much more spacious. Sure, saloons may look a lot bigger from the outside. However, saloons are characterised by high boot lips and narrow interior spaces. This will mean getting all the gear that comes with a family into the saloon will be quite the challenge. Hatchbacks, on the other hand, have all the boot space you could need. Whether it’s a pushchair, pets, or kids’ bikes, most modern hatchbacks will accommodate perfectly for family life. When you put the rear seats down, there’s even more space for you to use. Yes, hatchbacks may not look as luxurious as saloons. However, the practicality you’ll get from them is handy for any family.

If there’s one thing which people overlook when buying a family car, it’s the doors. Obviously, you should be aiming for a five door rather than a three. However, you need to make sure the doors in the back are nice and wide. There’s one simple reason for this; child seats. For a completely fool proof way of checking this, but the car seat in advance and take some measurements. All cars will accommodate for the dimensions of the seat, but think about how easy it will be to install. After this, you’re going to have to get the child in and out of their seat fairly regularly. When you’re looking around a dealership like RRG Group, be sure to open the rear doors, and imagine doing all this. If it seems like it’d be a squeeze, look for something else!

Finally, keep a sharp eye out for sliding rear seats. For anyone in the market for a good family car, this should be a hugely attractive feature. The Golf SV MPV is one example, but there are many good hatchbacks with this handy touch. With complete ease, you can slide the seats backwards to give your kids more legroom, and forwards to create more storage in the back. Some other cars also have rear seats that can recline somewhat. This will stop your kids’ heads lolling haphazardly around if they fall asleep!

Keep these tips in mind when you’re browsing for your family car. It can be a big change to completely forget about comfort and luxury. Believe me though, you’ll learn to love it!

    • We waited a fair bit for the Tiguan R to arrive but that means it has been given enough thought and executed with the sort of German precision that makes us happy to have waited.

As fast SUVs go it’s a cracker, and with a price tag starting from R1,014,900 it is actually decent value in the segment.

It’s fun, aggressive when you want it to be and remarkably civilised when you don’t. Cars like this rarely make sense, but the Tiguan R is one case where that argument starts to change one's mind.

We cannot wait to drive the matching Golf next week!

Zandvoort Blue would not be our choice but the looks have certainly grown on us. What about all of you?

    • If you’re expecting a faster, angrier and more focused version of the original 86, you’re going to be happy with this car.

Toyota finally gave the 86 more power. It’s not take-your-breath-away power, but again, it’s not made to win drag races. If you want more power, get a Supra.

Sure it is a bit more pricey this time around but it is a no-regrets kind of car that you will enjoy just as much today as 10 years from now.

Long live the manual transmission, especially when it’s packaged within something as fun as the Toyota GR86.
