5 Must Do’s After An Auto Crash

Accidents are just that, accidents. Meaning they happen when we least expect them to and usually occur at the worst possible moment. And when it comes to auto crashes, besides the accident itself and any injuries, we are usually left without a means of transportation. At this point, when our mind should be the clearest and sharpest, we are overwhelmed with everything that is happening and unable to think straight.

However, that is the precise moment when clear, focused thoughts and actions are needed the most. The steps taken at the site of the accident can make the difference between getting the damages and compensation you deserve and ending up with nothing.

Planning for the consequences of an auto crash before it even happens may seem pessimistic, yet it’s the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your property. The best recipe for success? Become familiar with the 5 must do’s after an auto crash. When it happens, don’t show anger or express any remorse; simply follow these steps:

    1.  Get to know the other driver or drivers

After determining the extent of your injuries, spring into action. This is not the time to be bashful. You need to get the information on the other drivers including their names, contact numbers and where they live. Get their insurance information, paying special attention in case the name on the policy is not the same.

    2.  Pictures do tell a thousand words

Take out your cell phone and take pictures of the vehicles involved. Make sure to capture license plate numbers, cars’ makes, and models. Photograph any stop signs or speed limit indicators. Keep your photos private and don’t fall into the temptation of posting them on social media.

    3.  Write down what happened to the best of your recollection

As soon as you can, write down what happened. Remember that the longer you wait, the hazier your memories will become. Try to be especially careful when describing what happened immediately before the accident. Was the other driver swerving? Driving over the speed limit? Describe the damage to your car and your injuries.

    4.  Are there any witnesses?

If your injuries allow you to move, approach all witnesses and get their statements and contact information. Remember that their memories will also become less clear as time goes by.

    5.  Keep a file with any police reports and all medical records

Your personal injury lawyer will need to analyze all documents pertaining to the case. Help the process along by having everything filed in one place. Include both police reports and medical information. Keep a file on any expenses, medications or treatments you have undergone and any others that will need to happen in the future.

Your personal injury lawyer is on your side and wants to make sure you get all the compensation you are entitled to. Keep in mind that although your insurance is meant to protect you against financial consequences that could seriously impact your life, you might still need to pay for medical visits, medications or treatments, not to mention having to take care of massive car repair bills.
